Chapter Ten

At eight-fifteen the following morning Hannah walked out onto the back porch, saw Albert’s truck parked by the stable door, and went to find him. She hadn’t gotten to bed until late the previous night, but she’d slept in until six-thirty, which was a luxury. Usually, in spring and summer, she was up before the sun. The nice thing was that the house was absolutely quiet this morning, something she’d rarely experienced in all the years it had been her home.

Hannah’s houseguest, Sara, had walked across the field to have breakfast with Lydia Byler. Susanna had left after the wedding supper with her sister Anna to sleep over, and Irwin was fishing today. As for the newlyweds, contrary to the usual custom of spending their wedding night at the bride’s parents’, they’d chosen to bundle Caleb’s small, sleepy daughter into their buggy and return to their own home shortly after nine the previous night.

Tired but pleased by how well Rebecca’s wedding had gone, Hannah couldn’t help feeling a little guilty by how relieved she was that she’d found good husbands for all of her marriageable daughters. It had been her prayer for so many years. Now it had been fulfilled. But the niggling worry over Susanna was still there.

Hannah had kept an eye on her at the reception and later at the supper and the barn games that followed that the young people so enjoyed. Susanna had seemed to enjoy herself as much as anyone, but she and David King had barely glanced at one another. Was it too much to hope that they had grown bored with each other’s company? So, life was good this morning, and she had much to be thankful for.

Albert Hartman was one of those blessings, and she wanted to thank him for his help the previous day. She didn’t know why she’d panicked at so small a thing as an upset drink table, but at the time, it had seemed like a disaster. Mercifully, Albert had been there to take over. When she’d gone into the kitchen, she’d found him and Grace happily squeezing bags of lemons. Albert had heated the lemon juice and stirred in the sugar before pouring the mixture over blocks of ice, creating the best lemonade Hannah had ever tasted. And he’d brought bottles of fruit juice and the other drinks. There had been so much left over, even after supper, that she’d have plenty to take to church and share on the next worship Sunday. She had thanked him last night when he had left with his family, but she wanted to thank him again. He really had gone beyond what most would have done. Especially with him being male. Hannah didn’t know a single man in her family who would have taken on the job so good-naturedly or with such success.

Hannah found Albert cleaning out the alpacas’ water trough in the loafing shed. A circle of alpacas stood motionless a few yards away, ears perked and wide-eyed, watching his every movement.
